Hijab in Iran | What You Should Wear as a Female Tourist
One of the first things that a female might ask when traveling to Iran is about hijab and dress code in Iran. If you are planning to travel to Iran, the following information might be useful for you.
The Official Dress Code for Woman
After the 1979 revolution in Iran, the new Islamic laws enforced women to have Hijab outside. Since then Iranian women wear hijab in public places. Also, international visitors are required to dress like residents of Iran.
How much should women cover their bodies?
Based on Islamic laws, the woman should cover all their body except their faces and their hands (fingers and wrest). But in reality, these rules are not completely applied. While there are some women who prefer to wear hijab completely, there are others who loosen it up a little.
Although heavy hijab like black chadors is much fewer these days, you can still see women wearing this type of coverage in the street. In some cities of Iran which are considered religious places, like Mashhad and Qom, wearing a hijab is a much more important issue.
Hijab for Female Tourists in Iran
As mentioned above, tourists should respect hijab laws too. But most of the time, they don’t have to wear it as strictly as Iranian do. But remember, in holy places such as Imam Reza Holy Shrine, Fatima Masoumeh Shrine, or Jamkaran Mosque you have to wear a chador; either a black one or a colorful one. There are places that can borrow you one at the entrances of the shrines.
What to Wear in Iran as a Female Tourist?
As a female tourist in Iran, you can wear long trousers or long skirts, knee-length manteaux, and a scarf or shawl to cover your hair. If you are traveling to Iran during the summer, it is better to choose loose cotton clothes that are light-colored. Also, at this time of the year, you can find wide-leg and palazzo trousers which are more comfortable. You can also try a long jumpsuit with a jacket.
