Yazd

wandering in a fairytale

Welcome to Yazd

A labyrinth of mud-made alleys with ‘Badgirs’ and gleaming blue domes between. This fairytale is called Yazd. The second biggest Zoroastrian community of Iran is located here, like their fire temple also does. Furthermore, this town is a perfect spot for making daytrips to nearby villages or the deserts surround. Yazd has it all for you to explore!

What to do in Yazd?

Explore the old district with its mud-brick houses which almost look like a filmset for tourists because of the narrow alleys, Badgirs and Ganats. But in fact, this is where people live their lifes! Don’t be worried about finding the way back, just ask someone to lead you to the main street. From there it’s easier to direct yourself to the place you had in mind.

Get also on the rooftops to have a panoramic view over Yazd’s stunning mosques and minarets. Probably restaurants and hotels are the best places to ask for getting to a roof to wonder beautiful Yazd!

Visit the Jameh Mosque, and listen to the call of the prayer from this mosque, it’s enchanting better to say. Because the city is quite silent, it’s special to hear how the Azan (prayer) breaks the silence!

Visit a Zoorkhaneh somewhere in the city, it’s an old Persian gym where they practice a traditional sport. In the city center you will find some Zoorkhanehs which are open to public.

Get to know more about Zoroastrianism, once the state religion of Iran before Islamic conquest made its entrance. Zoroastrians are the oldest religious community in Iran, and Yazd has the second biggest Zoroastrian population of the country. Visit one of the Ateshkadehs (fire temples) to learn more about this old Persian religion. And certainly don’t forget the Tower of Silence! The place where the Zoroastrians gave their death family members to the vultures until the sixties of the last century.

Furthermore, see Yazd’s hidden desert, get friendly with the locals and don’t forget to eat some saffron ice and faloodeh.

Enjoy Yazd!
