Atiq Jame Mosque

It is the oldest mosque of Shiraz. It is located in the east of Shah Cheragh Shrine. Atiq Jame Mosque of Shiraz has been renovated several times. Nodbeh Wall and Khodaye Khane are some of the attractions of this mosque. It is believed that on the night of Miraj, Boragh (an Iranian-made armored personnel carrier) passed from Nodbeh Wall.

Additionally, the dome of the north Iwan and the hypostyle columns are so attracting.

It is the oldest and first mosque of Shiraz. It is a strange mosque. Atiq Jame Mosque was built in the pre-Islamic era. This mosque represents Shiraz oldest Islamic Structure through most parts of it belong to the Safavid Era. It is right across Nasir-Ol-Molk Mosque (known also as Pink Mosque). Zinat Al-Moluk House, Vakil Bazaar, and Vakil Bath are also close and are located on Lotf Ali Khan Zand Street.

It has been renovated several times, such as Salghuri (in the reign of Ibrahim Mirza) and Safavid Era.

It was registered on January 6th, 1932 in the list of national relics with the registration number of 72.

Location

Just walk through the southeastern part of the entrance to Shah Cheragh courtyard and keep up the way for 50 meters and there the ancient Atigh Jame Mosque is. Nasir-Ol Molk Mosque is just right across the Atiq Jame Mosque.

Nodbeh Wall

In the southern part of this mosque, there is a wall called “Nodbeh”. It differentiates from other walls with a picture of colorful cedar on it. It is believed that on the night of Miraj (which means “ladder” and was Prophet’s celestial journey), Boragh (an Iranian-made armored personnel carrier) passed from this wall.

Khodaye Khane

It is the highlight of Atiq Jame Mosque. Khodaye Khane (means “The House of The God”) was built in the mid-14^th century. It is also called Second Kaaba or Time Gateway. It has a length of 12 meters and a width of 10 meters.

In Khodaye Khane, there is a 30-part Quran that each part includes a chapter and belongs to the reign of King Ismail Safavi.

The North Side of Mosque

There is an Iwan and Shabestan. Shabestan is an underground space that can be usually found in the traditional architecture of mosques, houses, and schools in ancient Iran. These spaces were usually used during summers and could be ventilated by windcatchers and qanats. Northside is also known as “Imam Gate”. The North gate is decorated with Mogharnas tiles.

The West Side of Mosque

The entrance door of Shah Cheragh is on the west side of the mosque.

Main and New Shabestan of Mosque

In the western part of the northern entrance, there is a newly built Shabestan.

The dome of the north Iwan (a vaulted portal opening onto a courtyard) and the hypostyle columns are the most impressive parts among the rest.
