What You Need to Know About Money in Iran

Basically, there are two main reasons that tourists encounter when using Iran's money. Here they are:

1- Iran Has Two Currencies: Rial and Toman

The main problem with using money in Iran is that, believe it or not, there are two main currencies in Iran and people use both of them: Rial and Toman.

What is the difference between Rial and Toman?

Rial is the official currency in Iran. All the numbers that you see on money notes, coines, and banks are written in Rial. On the other hand, Toman is a common, unofficial, and imaginary currency between people. Each Toman equals 10 Rial. So, an amount written in Rial is larger and simply has an extra zero.

You will see and hear prices in Toman in shops and among people. Remember, if a shopkeeper or a taxi driver tells the price, make sure you understand the currency. Simply ask them, Rial or Toman. If they tell the price in Toman, simply add an extra zero to turn it to Rial. For example, if a taxi driver told you the price will be 5000 Toman, you should pick the note with 50,000 written on it, which indicates the price in Rial.

2- There is no International Credit Cards in Iran
