History of Fatima Masoumeh Shrine
Fatima Masoumeh died in Qom in 201 A.H. as she was on her way to join her brother, Imam Reza in Khorasan. Abbasid Sunnis attacked the caravan she was traveling with and killed 23 of her family members and friends. She herself was imprisoned by a woman from the Sunni enemies, fell ill, and was asked to be taken to Qom, where she died.
Qom was famous to be the birthplace of the huge movement that led to the Iranian Revolution in 1979. Ayatollah Khomeini, the leader of the movement and the first official leader of Iran, studied and lived in Qom for a while. He used the images of this shrine in posters, money, and stamps after the revolution. He also expanded her shrine so that there would be more space for the pilgrims. If you take a look at Khomeini’s mausoleum, you will notice its similarity to this shrine. The golden dome, for example, is one of the architectural similarities.
Structure of Fatima Masoumeh Shrine
There are 3 domes in Fatima Masoumeh Shrine that were built at different times. Their names are The Old Dome, The New Dome (Atabaki Dome), and Saheb Al-Zaman Dome.
The Old Dome is in the northern part of the shrine. It gives a magnificent sight to the shrine with its four beautiful verandas. The New Dome (Atabaki Dome) is another eye-catching part of the shrine with four northern, eastern, western, and southern verandas that each lead to a separate entrance. The special architecture of the verandas took about 8 years to complete. The construction of the newest dome, Saheb Al-Zaman Dome, was started in 2002 and finished in 2005. The surrounding walls of this dome are decorated with brick and white cement Quran inscriptions. The minarets in the two sides of the golden dome and other parts of the shrine have added to the beauty you recognize when you enter. There are carvings of holy names of God or Prophet Muhammad and other words in Kofi language on the minarets.
