Today you’ll enjoy lunch during your Shiraz day tour at a local restaurant we’ve selected for its delicious Persian cuisine and friendly ambiance. The Iranian people are gregarious by nature and some of your fellow diners, once they hear you speaking English, may ask: where are you from!

Many foreign visitors are surprised that the city itself has so few surviving historical monuments when there are such archaeological treasures in the neighboring countryside, but earthquakes over the centuries have taken a heavy toll. During your Shiraz tour, you'll see some of the most important sites with a local tourist guide.

Itinerary

Drive for an hour to get to Persepolis Complex, the magnificent pre-Islamic UNESCO listed world heritage site. Founded by Darius I in 518 B.C, Persepolis was the capital of the Achaemenid Empire. It was built on an immense half-artificial, half-natural terrace, where the inspiration of Mesopotamian models created the impressive palace complex. Persepolis was expanded by King Xerxes I (son of Darius I), who unfortunately invaded and destroyed much of Greece in 480 BCE. 'Alexander the Great' described Persepolis as the wealthiest city under the sun, so he eventually looted and burned the soft materials.

Drive to Necropolis (Naghsh-e Rustam) that is confirmed to have hosted the tombs of Achaemenid, Sassanian, Elamite and Qajar kings, bass relieves and other important inscriptions. The order of the tombs in Naqshe-e Rustam, from left to right is Darius II, Artaxerxes I, Darius I, Xerxes I.
