Qeysarie Gate

The Gate to the Ancient Bazaar

Qeysarie Gate is a historical entrance to the main bazaar of Isfahan and is considered as a part of the complex of Naqsh-e Jahan Square – the main attraction of Isfahan. Along with Naqsh-e Jahan Square, the gate is registered as UNESCO World Heritage Object and is a popular destination for tourists visiting Isfahan.

History of Qeysarie Gate

Qeysarie Gate was built between 1611 and 1629 and connected Naqsh-e Jahan Square with the old Bazaar of Isfahan. The construction was initiated by Shah Abbas and led by architect Shaykh Bahai. Naqshe Jahan and buildings around it were meant to symbolize the majesty of the new capital and all the components of the power, so Qeysarie Gate along with bazaar reflects the power of Isfahan merchants.

The gate originally had 3 floors, but the third one was destroyed. It connected newly built Naqsh-e Jahan Square and ancient bazaar and became a true decoration of the northern part of the square.

Qeysarie Bazaar

Qeysarie Bazaar, or the Grand Bazaar of Isfahan, dates back to the 11th century. It is one of the oldest and largest bazaars of the Middle East. The original bazaar was destroyed several times, and the modern structure (built in the 17th century) is considered to be the longest roofed market in the world. Two kilometers of vaulted streets link the old and the new city. The bazaar consists of different parts, but the main product here – carpets and traditional rugs.
